I won't waste time recapping how a dude with the gift of gab and the love of music has made a name for himself in this market. You can't argue with his skills.
But the dude has a thin skin, and if you don't kiss his ass and tell him how great he is, he's likely to rip you for it.
I know of a few stories, but the best story is one I can vouch for. I am connected to a woman whose friend works in the media. He is not a DJ or a news anchor, he's one of those faceless guys who is as important to the reporting as Jason DeRusha. OK, a lot more important than DeRusha.
My friend showed me some of the online evidence to help substantiate the story. Basically the media guy tweeted a comment about Oake. The comment ripped Oake, sort of, and initially it seemed that Oake was cool with it. Basically the media guy wasn't a fan of Oake's work on The Current's morning show.
But Oake didn't brush it off. No, he's too sensitive and self-important to do that. He messaged the media guy and asked the media guy about the Twitter comment. I'm not sure exactly how that exchange went, I didn't have access to those exchanges, but eventually the media guy shared via his social network that Oake bitched at him for the comment he initially made.
The best part is that Oake concluded the exchange by telling the media guy he didn't care what the media guy thinks. Somebody get Oake a dictionary and point him to an entry for "irony." Oake initiated the private exchange for an explanation of the initial tweet. Yet Oake doesn't care what the guy thinks?
Oake has had a steady, solid career in this market, but his success at the local level has gone to his head. Perhaps he was an asshole growing up in Coon Rapids, I don't know, but there are multiple stories out there that would prompt more than a couple of people to say, "Yes, Brian Oake is an asshole."
