The charmed life of Paul Lambert

You've got to admire Paul "Meatsauce" Lambert.

I don't know the full story behind the rise of Lambert, but it's a great story. (I've heard the story behind his Meatsauce nickname, but I don't quite remember how it goes, and I have no interest in hearing it again.)

Here's my assessment of Lambert's schtick: You take a guy with mediocre, at best, broadcasting skills, add a dash of pudginess and top it with a little self-deprecation and somehow you get a success story that's too good to be true.

I don't remember how long it has been since Lambert found his way onto the KFAN airwaves, but he started as a bit player on the station's morning show, as best as I understand it. (I can't tolerate the morning show, so I rarely listen for more than 10 minutes.) Desperate for whatever minimal hourly wage the station was willing to pay him, seemingly, Lambert would show up anywhere and everywhere he could. Whenever there was a job to do later in the broadcast day, Lambert would stick around and fill the seat. He seemed to end up sitting in on Dan Barreiro's show most often.

As time went on Lambert became a prominent player on the KFAN morning show, despite the fact he seemed to play the fool most of the time. He has never developed a polished, competent on-air persona, but that doesn't seem to slow him down. It's as if people want to listen to a guy who sounds as if he has no business on a major market radio station.

As I noted, Lambert was a bit doughy. Nobody would describe him as debonair. But a few years ago he decided it was time to stop looking the part of a slob as he played the role of the doofus, so he started to lose weight. That hardly explained what happened next.

His improbable career in major market radio wasn't enough, evidently. Lambert pulled another horseshoe out of his rear end. He married the easy-on-the-eyes female sidekick of the local top 40 radio station this spring. Yep, a doughy guy with male pattern baldness is a cult figure in Twin Cities radio and married the cutesy sidekick at the neighboring station.

It's a fairy tale, I tell you.

Obviously I'm not in awe of Lambert's skills. Love them or hate them, most personalities on the radio have a quality and skill set that tells you they're a radio personality. Not Lambert. He continues to sound like a guy who is struggling through his first semester at a college radio station. And yet people seem to love him for it. If he's giving what the people want, there's nothing wrong with that. Those who don't enjoy his work can easily change the station.

I can appreciate the role of the dopey sidekick on a sports radio station, but the latest announcement about Lambert, via City Pages, can only make me laugh. He's going to be one of the on-air personalities for the horrible new "alternative" station KFAN's parent company, Clear Channel, is launching at 93.3 FM. So far the station is a painful joke of an alternative station, and having Lambert try to fill the role of one of the jocks should only cement my opinion of it.

I suspect Lambert will double dip. Clear Channel will likely pay him a few dollars over the paltry salary he receives for his work on KFAN and expose him to the non-sports audience. Perhaps those that love the milquetoast flavor of 93.3 will enjoy Lambert's bumbling, stumbling ways. Or perhaps Lambert will become the broadcast professional he presumably wanted to be all those years ago when he was a bit player on KFAN. Time will tell. Good luck to him. I won't be tuned in to 93.3, so it won't matter to me if he succeeds or fails.

Lest you think I simply want to slap Lambert on the back for his good fortune, I will note that the guy has skin as thin as Jeff Dubay. Lambert has no problem playing the fool or dishing out a heaping helping of self-deprecation, but as soon as somebody suggests anything mildly unflattering about him via social media, he'll be quick to cut you off at the knees, at least when it comes to Twitter. That receding hairline is further exposing awfully thin skin. There's a good chance this blog's Twitter account will be blocked by Lambert if he even thinks one critical thing has been written about him.

It will be interesting to see where Lambert is in 10 years. His schtick seems to play well, but radio is a fickle mistress. As soon as Clear Channel is done with him, he'll be tossed aside faster than Chad Hartman. Will there be another radio station ready to embrace him if Clear Channel decides to untether him? Only time will tell.

I'm at a loss to explain the aura of Lambert, but you can't hate a guy who lives a charmed life, even if you don't root for him.

As for Dubay, do you think he hates Lambert? Dubay's tenure at KFAN had a similar track as Lambert's. Dubay was Meatsauce before Lambert was Meatsauce. Dubay might not hate Lambert, but I'm sure he's bitter he threw away his career and opened a door for Lambert to walk through.

  1. You're a creep. Why bother with this blog post? If you don't like him or the morning show, don't listen. Clearly enough people (myself included) enjoy his bit to keep him employed. Spend more time worrying about yourself instead of being infatuated with Sauce.

    1. So commentary on public figures should be limited only to those who we worship wholly? Not in the United States.

Thanks for reading, even if your comment is illogical.

    2. Couldn't agree more. I honestly can say I don't get how people find this individual somewhat amusing. But I guess people are always looking for those who appear to be worse off than themselves to make them feel their pitiful existence is worth while.

    3. People think David Letterman is brilliant, others think he is not the leas bit funny. I don't get it, either.

Clearly Lambert doesn't annoy everyone, as he has built a nice career for himself.

  2. I love his bit on the power trip but his TRUE talents are shown on "Saturday's with Sauce" You can see the effort and professionalism in that show. He really does take his job seriously and has improved immensely since he started at the FAN

    1. That's my biggest oversight of the blog, not mentioning his Saturday show. While I'm not a fan of the KFAN morning show, and I don't hold his talent in high regard, I hear a decent amount of his stuff on Saturday afternoons, and it's usually entertaining. I'm not ready to demand he gets his own weekday show, but the Saturday show is a nice respite from national sports feeds on the weekends. Perhaps we'll see Lambert anchoring the 93.3 morning show. I might enjoy that. If it were up to me, I'd give him a shot.

    3. It's nice to see that somebody actually took the time to read it, rather than assume since the third paragraph doesn't kiss his ass, the entire blog must be filled with insults and hatred.

The second to last graph spells it out: "I'm at a loss to explain the aura of Lambert, but you can't hate a guy who lives a charmed life, even if you don't root for him."

But most simple-minded rubes probably quit reading long before that.

The two of them getting married know gives those A Holes at Chump Channel a chance to rake them over the coals. Good luck on the next contract.

  9. I seriously don't get how anyone can enjoy listening to Paul Lambert. If he is being paid minimum wage for being on the Power Trip, he's still being paid too much. I appreciate what Chris and Cory bring to the show, but every time Paul opens his mouth it's cringe worthy. He brings nothing to the show.

    1. The dynamic of the show as a whole doesn't work for me. There are moments that I enjoy, but not enough that I listen regularly. Some form of the morning show has been around for many years now with and without the Superstar, so they are obviously doing something right.

  13. I quite enjoyed this piece and I thoroughly respect the idea that you allow anonymous comments.

With respect to Meatsause, I have a long-winded, visually tiring verbal hunch that draws direct, and almost immediate, correlation between our hero and that of infamous movie character Forrest Gump.

I don’t want to get to much into my theory, more so because you allow anonymous comments and my pretty feelings do tend to get hurt and less so because I am sitting here in the work environment being paid to be a kindly tool for the man, but understand that I am somewhat addressing America's love affair with the slow-witted, naïve, good-hearted who witnesses, and in some cases influences, a slight few defining events.

I like the font that you’ve chosen with this blog. Was that piece configurable from an end user perspective?

  14. He has people who love his schtick, and that's not easy to accomplish, so whether by design or by accident, he has done something right. If he has a problem being disliked by a percentage of the KFAN audience, he's in the wrong business, but I don't have any reason to think he does.

  15. All i know is he get paid too much, that goes for all of these radio personalities. multiple trips, they just bought a house, honeymoon in italy, Falen bought a new car. must be nice! for what? 32 hours a week worth of "work" getting paid to talk, and talk about hogley's sister. c'mon!!!!

  16. I think it's safe to say that Lambert's tenure on the station, or radio as a whole, won't end in quite the ignominious way that Dubay's did.

  17. Meatsauce is a complete bore. When he attempts to offer serious insight in to ANY topic, it generally ends up ludicrous, at best. The man strikes me as someone that is incredibly insecure with his persona and plays the big idiot part perfectly, attempting to cover up the fact that he actually is "dumber than a post".

    ReplyDelete
  18. I have to say- long before stumbling upon this blog- I have always loved to hate the KFAN morning show, and equally as much hate hearing Falen's (spell?) annoying voice / KDWB being piped in at my gym in mornings that I manage to go. My worst nightmare would be a dinner invite from that couple.

    1. Thanks for the laugh. The thought of the two of them having dinner is hilarious. I'm guessing they spend much of their time talking about their jobs and how to squeeze another dime out of their celebrity personas.

Who knows, perhaps they're boring, normal people when they have guests over for dinner.

      Delete
  19. Envy and jealousy...mad because they have a house and new car? It is very presumptive to assume one 'knows' a radio personality, and to make comments on how laughable dinner would be with them and their presumptive topics of conversation is laughable. This whole thing is amature hour. The author's pithy attempt at coming off as objective and professional is half-hearted and woefully transparent.

  23. I've been out of touch, and out of the state, for a while. This is the first I've heard any suggestion that the royal couple of Clear Channel Mpls. (I refuse to call it I Heart) is no longer a thing. They've done a good job of marketing themselves as a wedded duo... if they were no longer joined in matrimony it would make life interesting in many ways for those who listen to the Clear Channel stations.

    ReplyDelete
  24. There's definitely something going on. Like all their on-air divorces, you went from hearing about the wives non-stop to one day you realize it's been months since they've mentioned their spouse.. And that's how you know Sauce and Falen are kaput. Surprised he didn't hang himself. No wedding ring in pictures, ambiguous comments about freedom and something not working out in her Insta confirm it.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Same thing with Kriesel, who divorced his wife. You just stopped hearing about "Katie" one day.. At least he had the decency to post he was single on Twitter. They don't have to give the details, but it'd be nice if they didn't pretend nothing happened.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Thanks for your comment. I've never been enamored with John Kriesel. He signed up for a tough gig, paid a huge price and has to live with the fallout of his service to our country. I certainly respect him for that.

He has been given opportunities thanks to the high price he paid, and he has taken advantage of them. How much is too much? No right answer.

Although I don't make a habit of following him or the KFAN morning show, I have observed his Twitter account and it seems rather obviousl that Kriesel has a pretty good life, one that affords him frequent trips to Vegas and a quasi-celebrity persona on KFAN. I'm not surprised things didn't work out with his wife. It seems like his priorities have changed quite a bit since he came home from the war. Hard to expect him to be the same person, but it seems like he wants to embrace a rock star lifestyle, perhaps at the expense of his family.

  27. It's funny because I stumbled on to this site after listening to the show this morning, and Sauce tossed out the line, "I live alone...". I'm a regular listener of the show, and it got me thinking that I haven't heard anyone mention Fallen on-air for months.

This sparked my curiosity, so I googled "Meatsauce Fallen", and was met with a number of results - this site included. All I can say is that they seemed like an odd couple to begin with, but whatever. I think that King of Queens/According To Jim-cute-chick married to an oaf thing is played out.

I enjoyed your commentary on Sauce, and agree that he was the beneficiary of being at the right place at the right time. I will, however, submit that I think his schtick is mostly "a bit", like everything else on the show. They do the bit thing so much that they have to preface or qualify a truthful statement with, "and this isn't a bit...".

I think the line between Paul (the person) and Meatsauce (the character) have become so intertwined and blurred over the years, that it's now hard to see where Paul stops and Meatsauce begins. Or, we're simply being punked by a character, and he's shrewd "like a fox" - akin to Jessica Simpson and her "Chicken of the Sea/Tuna" thing. I truly believe she played the role of stupid all the way to the bank, as she now sits atop a clothing line business worth millions.

Anyway, I met Sauce last year at the State Fair, and in our brief encounter, he seemed like a nice guy. In that moment I didn't see the character. He was just a dude that was happy that I listen to the show.

    1. I doubt that what you hear is exactly what you get in "real life," and as I've noted before, he's nothing special, but people like his bit, and he's living a great life, regardless of whether or not he's married to the queen of Dave Ryan's world.

I'll be revisiting the life and times of Paul and the former Mrs. Meatsauce in a blog posting in the next few weeks.... I hope.

      Thanks for reading.

  28. What a sad job to have, to write such distasteful things about another human being. Who truly cares about how you feel towards this man? What you wrote is actually embarrassing for you personally. Not for him. You will pass on one day, knowing you wrote such an ugly
thing about someone you don’t even know. You have impacted this person in a way that you obviously don’t care about. How absolutely gross.. I feel sad for the two of you on many different levels.

    1. Thank you for not reading my writing. I recommend you see a mental health professional. You shouldn't be turning to the internet as an outlet for the anger in your life.

    2. Your answer to almost any critical comment is based on the assumption they didn't read your writing. If you truly believe that, you may benefit from some introspection yourself. Think about it: Write blog...commenter interprets as saying distasteful things and expresses that...many people agree (myself included)...you convince yourself that since you wrote a few sentences giving mild compliments to the subject, even if back-handed, that anyone who says your blog rips him didn't read the article...then you diagnose them with turning to the internet as an outlet for the anger in their life based on one post while displaying a lot more information about your own thought process, which happens to resemble your accusation. Hmmm...blog writer who publishes purely speculative commentary about the personal life of someone he doesn't know based on one post is also willing to jump to conclusions about whether or not a commenter read his entire post and then makes psychiatric recommendation. I don't know you, but the word "projection" comes to mind. https://psychologydictionary.org/projection/

  29. If you have not served, which I am extremely confident in assuming based on your written opinion about Kriesel above, you're absolutely out of your lane making any sort of judgement about his lifestyle, marriage, or adjustment returning from combat and physical rehabilitation. Of course, you're entitled to your opinion. One thing you my be interested in is the fact your speculation about 'sauce is extremely different than speculation about a wounded veteran that experienced what Kriesel did. An extremely significant portion of the population has been involved in a divorce while a very small percentage has served or been deployed, let alone lost limbs in combat and watched their "co-workers" die in front of them. Yes, it's a chosen profession and very few are looking for sympathy. That said, for those who have come back from overseas that read a blog like this, your judgement of Kriesel demonstrates a clear willingness on your part to make judgements while having an extreme lack of understanding of another's situation that it discredits the rest of your commentary that seemed logical and well expressed until reading this comment.

    ReplyDelete
  30. There wasn't judgment, as you called it, just speculation. And like it or not, when you want to make money off your name, you sign up for both judgment and speculation, fair or unfair.

If you want to dismiss everything over speculation about Kriesel, more power to you.
